Short Biography

PROF. DR. M. DIN SYAMSUDDIN is the Professor on Islamic Political Thought at National Islamic University, Jakarta. He holds several international appointments including as memberships in the leadership councils of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Salam Messaging Centre and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Salam Messaging Centre; Advisory Forum for the King Abdulaziz Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), Austria; Senior Fellow at Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, Jordan; President Moderator of the Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP), Japan; Co-President of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP), USA; Member of the Group for Strategic Vision “Russia-Islamic World; Chairman of the World Peace Forum; and a Member of the UK-Indonesia Islamic Advisory Group. He was previously a member of the World Council of World Islamic Call Society, Libya and Vice Secretary-General of the World Islamic People’s Leadership, Libya.

In Indonesia, Professor Din Syamsuddin is the Chairman of Movement for Great Indonesia (Pergerakan Indonesia Maju/PIM), Chairman of Steering Committee of Indonesia’s Movement to Save Earth (Indonesia Bergerak Menyelamatkan Bumi/Siaga Bumi), Presidium of the Inter-Religious Council of Indonesia, and Chairman of Centre for Dialogue and Cooperation among Civilization (CDCC) since 2007. Previously, he was Chairman of the Advisory Council of Indonesia’s Council of Ulama, Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulama, President of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, and Vice Chairman of Advisory Board of the Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim Indonesia/ICMI). In his younger days, Professor Din was president of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah Young Man Movement and Central Board of Muhammadiyah Student Association.

Professor Din Syamsuddin was previously involved in politics as the Special Envoy of President of Republic of Indonesia for Interfaith and Inter Civilization Dialogue and Cooperation. He also served in the People’s Consultative Assembly in his capacity as Vice Secretary ‘Karya Pembangunan’ Faction in 1998 and Vice Chairman in 1999. He was also Vice General-Secretary in the Central Executive Board of Indonesia’s Golkar Party. Professor Din Syamsuddin also had experience in civil service being the Director-General of Development and Placement of Manpower in Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower between 1998-2000.

Professor Din Syamsuddin is the winner of several awards including the Midaliyyat Khidmat al-Mujtama’  Medali Pengabdian Masyarakat) by the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates; Japan’s Order of The Rising Star, Gold, and Silver Star; Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation; Indonesian Broadcasting Commission’s Awards as Figure Broadcasting Soveregnity in Indonesia (Penghargaan Komoso Penyiaran Indonesia sebagai Tokoh yang Aktif Mendukung Kedaulatan Penyiaran di Indonesia); Republika’s The Figure of Change (Tokoh Perubahan Republika); the World Chinese Economic Forum Lifetime Achievement Award; Ordine della stella d’Italia – the Star of Italian Solidarity; World of First Degree (Al-wisām li Addarajah al-Ūla); and the Muslim Figure Award by the State of Penang, Malaysia.

Professor Din holds a Doctorate and Masters in Islamic Studies from the University of California and a Bachelor of Theology and Philosophy from the National Islamic University.  He was also conferred the Doctor Honoris Causa on Islamic Philosophy by Fatoni University, Thailand.
